Diary/Letter 1 Version 2

William Jones wrote two versions of a diary on the voyage to Australia. It is likely that they were intended as letters, as he occasionally seems to address the reader, and that he copied the first version with minor alterations into a second letter. It is not known who the recipients of these letters were, although they were very probably his relatives, since they remained in the family. Version 1 concludes on 14 October 1852, while Version 2 finished six days later. He may have waited until arriving in Melbourne on 17 November 1852 to post these; alternatively mail was sometimes exchanged with ships sailing in the opposite direction.
