Dr Thomas H Price

The 1851 Census Returns for Bangor, Caernarvonshire list as occupants of 43 High Street Mrs. Sidney Price as head of the household and her five children. The fourth child, Thomas, was aged 6 and he had been born in Bangor.

Sidney Price was aged 39 and described as a milliner. She was originally Sidney Humphreys, the second child of John and Margaret Humphreys of Llaneuddog, Llanwenllwyfo, Anglesey, and was baptized on 4 August 1811 at Llanwenllwyfo church. She married John Price of Bangor and in 1851 lived next door to her brother Dr Thomas Humphreys of 45 High Street Bangor.

Thomas Price’s signature dated Dublin 1868, appears in a copy of Gray’s Anatomy, 3rd edition which has been preserved in the family. On the following page he signs himself Thomas H. Price, M.R.C.S., L.K.Q.C.P.I, L.M.I., Amlwch 1899. It is probably that the H. is an abbreviation of Humphreys. In the book I found an examination paper headed “The Owens College, 1879, First Year’s Scholarship and Prizes – Botany”. The paper bears the signature of W.J. Black. Presumably William Jones Black used the book as a medical student. The same Gray’s Anatomy was subsequently used by Leslie William Jones at Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1910 and by his son Ellis William Parry Jones at Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1944.

Thomas Price was educated at the Ledwich School of Anatomy, Medicine and Surgery, Dublin and at Mercer’s Hospital Dublin. He obtained the M.R.C.S. England in 1869 and was admitted a Licentiate of the Kings and Queens College of Physicians of Ireland on 14 July 1869, his place of residence at the time being given as Bangor, North Wales.
