The Llyslew Family Bible
The only clue to the age of the bible is the date of publication 1826 given on the frontispiece to the New Testament. It is covered in calf skin from a calf reared at Llyslew.
It was originally in the possession of William Jones (1789-1864) and his family of Llyslew, Llanidan, Anglesey. Various members of the family wrote their names or made their mark in the bible thus:
p. 272 Signature of John Hughes (1830-1886), son of William Jones.
p. 396 Signature of William Jones.
p. 500 Signature of John Hughes
p. 557 Stamp “H. Jones” (probably Hugh Jones, Llyslew 1799-1847)
p. 770 “William Jones’ Book”.
p. 1020 Signature of Catherine Jones (1828-1898), Llyslaw, Llanidan October 18th 1840.
p. 2 (New Testament) Mr. W. Jones, Llyslaw, Llanidan 1840 July.
p. 352 Elizabeth
Elinor Jones (1800-1850) Llyslaw, Llanidan.
From Llyslew the bible came to Treifan, Brynsiencyn, Anglesey through Eleanor Catharine Jones (1865-1925) daughter of Catherine Parry (1828-1898) who was a daughter of William Jones. In her will Eleanor Catharine Jones left it to Leslie William Jones (1891-1974) her eldest son. It was then kept at Hafod, Llanfairpwll, Anglesey from 1930 to 1974. On the death of Dr. Leslie W. Jones O.B.E. the bible passed to his elder son, Ellis William Parry Jones.
