The First Day of the Year 1845
Fine day. I was at home this morning, In the afternoon I went to Llanerchymedd fair. Was sick when coming home.

Thursday. Ditto. I was threshing this morning. In the afternoon go shooting with Mr. Hughes, Madyn. Shot 2 hares, 1 partrich. (Note: Mr. William Hughes of Madyn Dysw, Amlwch was an attorney who frequently went shooting with William Jones.

Friday. Ditto. I was threshing this morning. In the afternoon mixed heap of manure for potatoes in pen isa cae mawr Ty mawr. (Note: Welsh for the lower end of the big field of Ty mawr, a farm.)

Saturday. Fair. I was plowing for Richard Parry with boos & bees. (Notes: boos & bees were William Jones’ horses.)

Sunday. Heavy rain last night. I was home all day.

Monday. Rain. I began to plow ponc ynys felan this morning. In the afternoon threshed. (Note: ynys felan was one of the fields at Glybcoed. Ponc means a bank.)

Tuesday. Rain all day. I was threshing. At night go to the Club. Get notes from Bryn Fyches. (Note: Bryn Fyches was a farm nearby, O.S. Grid Reference 482 902.)

Wednesday. Fine day. I was plowing ynys felan all day. Been with Mr. Owens at night.

Sunday. Rain. Very wet. I have been to Richard Williams, Hengroesa. His cow was sick and cold. (Note: Hengroesa – a farm in the neighbouring parish of Llaneilian.)

Monday. Fair. We winnowed 16:3:0:2 of oats this morning, sent it to Cornelius. In the afternoon I boiled potatoes for the pigs and horses. (Note: Cornelius Williams of Glanrafon, Amlwch was a corn and flour merchant.)

Tuesday. Ditto. I was threshing oats. Been with Rowland Evans, cut chaff. At night go to Oddfellows Lodge.

Wednesday. Fair. I was threshing oats 4qr:2s:2h:0qts in two days. (Note: qr – quarter; s – stone; h –     ; qts – quarts, a measure of volume and not of weight.)

Thursday. Blowing hard west. I was plowing in cae adlod. Teach Joseph. I went to see D. Parry, engaged with him for plowing. In the afternoon went to the funeral of the old wife from Tyn y llwyn. Get tea in Plas uchaf with R. Edwards vain (? Rain). (Note: Joseph was William Jones’ youngest brother. He was baptized at Llanwenllwyfo on 29 July 1832 and would therefore have been 12 years old.)

Friday. Hard rain last night. Fair. I was threshing barley and winnowing 1qr:2s. Been with Miss O. Jones, Ty mawr and Mr. Hughes, Madyn. Shot 1 hare and partrich.

Saturday. Ditto. I was cutting gorse this morning. In the afternoon go to Amlwch. Been in the mountain with Connor. Get my supper with Mr. JH. (Note: the mountain – Parys mountain where copper was being mined. Mr. JH – Mr. J.H. Treweek, a Cornishman who was Captain of the mine and a friend of William Jones.)

Sunday. Ditto. Fine. I was very sick this morning. In the afternoon been in Penysarn, have pint of egg ale. William Roberts, Tyn y rhos came home with me. (Note: Penysarn, a village between Amlwch and William Jones’ home.)

Monday. Rain. Wet. I mixed soil and dung for the potatoes in cae mawr ucha. Thresh in the afternoon. (Note: cae mawr ucha – Welsh for the upper big field.)

Tuesday. Fine. I was threshing this morning. In the afternoon go to the plowing match at Penbol. Get my tea at Glasgrig fawr and go to the Oddfellows Lodge.

Wednesday. Ditto. I was carrying potatoes from the stack. They were very wet and rotten.

Thursday. Frost. I was ditto. Been to see R. Williams, Hengroesa who was hurt.

Friday. I was carrying oats to the barn to thresh. Thresh in the afternoon.

Saturday. Ditto. I filled the cart with muck for the potatoes, 20 loads. In the afternoon thresh and go to Amlwch. Stop late with R. Edwards, Bodafon, D. Owens, Trewyn. My mare threw me opposite Hugh Timothy’s.

Sunday. Showers. I was home till night. Been to see R. Williams, Hengroesa.

Monday. Ditto. I have been in Llaneuddog about the hay. In the afternoon been in the mountain with Mr. JH. Get some wine and brimstone yd. (Note: Llaneuddog, a neighbouring farm in the parish of Llanwenllwyfo, O.S. Grid Reference 467 882 and home of the Humphreys family. William Jones later married Anne Humphreys; the mountain – Parys mountain; Mr. JH – Mr. J.H. Treweek; brimstone – sulphur.)

Tuesday. Fair. I cut gorse and went with Mr. JH to Llaneuddog to try to buy hay. Treshed in the afternoon. Been with Tom gof. (Note: gof – Welsh for blacksmith.)

Wednesday. Ditto. I was threshing. Finish the stack and winnowing once through the machine.

Thursday. Rain. I threshed 2qr of barley with Pendu and go to Taldrws and buy 6 wethers for Mr. Hughes, Madyn. Been to see R. Williams. He has come round.

Friday. Hearls (? Hail). I mixed manure for potatoes in cae mawr. In the afternoon boiled potatoes for pigs and the horses and winnowing 2qr of barley.

Saturday. Fine. I was cutting gorse this morning. In the afternoon go to Amlwch, get money from W. Evans £2:12:0 for sheep. Come home with E. Williams, Llaneuddog. (Note: Edward Williams married Margaret Humphreys, widow of John Humphreys, Llaneuddog in 1826.)

Sunday. Ditto. I was in bed this morning. At night I was with R. Williams, Hen (groesa). John Parry was there.

Monday. Ditto. I was threshing this morning and mixed some muck with soil for the potatoes. I have been in Penrhynoer. (Note: Penrhynoer, a farm in the parish of Llangwyllog, O.S. Grid Reference 428 793, the home of John Jones, born 1775, died 1864. He was William Jones’ uncle, being a brother of David Jones, Glybcoed, born 1777, died 1860.)

Tuesday. Fine weather. I was threshing this morning. Boil potatoes for pigs and go to Amlwch and Frondeg. Stop late.

Wednesday. Ditto, frost. I was filling the carts with horses’ dung for the potatoes to mix with soil. In the afternoon thresh. Mr Morris Jones of Liverpool came here.

Thursday. Ditto. I was threshing this morning. In the afternoon go with Mr. Jones to see Parys mine and to Amlwch.

Friday. Fine. I was threshing this morning. In afternoon send 10qr:1s:1h:7qt at 18/9 to some stranger. Stop with Morris late.

Monday. Ditto. W. Rowland, Drs., myself been in Ty mawr. Cut gorse.

Tuesday. Fine day. I was with W. Rowland cutting sea sweeds.

Wednesday. Cold and dry. I have been to the Penrhynoer funeral. Stop late in Llanerchymedd. (Note: the Penrhyoer funeral was the funeral of William Jones’ cousin James Jones of Penrhynoer, Llangwyllog who had died on 28^th Feb. 1845 at the age of 26 and was buried in Llangwyllog churchyard.)

Thursday. Today I got new Victoria shoes. I went to Amlwch and from there to the mountain. Stop in Mona mine yard. Mr. J.H. (Treweek) rode my mare down and I got my tea in Rhos bathin. (Note: Victoria shoes were similar to Wellington boots but made of leather and laced at the sides.)

Saturday. Ditto. We winnowed 10qr:0s. Finish plowing for D.P. and go to Fron. Have all the money.

Sunday. Fine day. I was home this morning. In the afternoon hear Clwydfardd in Wesleyan Chapel. (Note: Clwydfardd was later Archdruid of Wales.)

Monday. Ditto. I was home all day winnowing 14q:0 of oats for seed and threshing barley. Been with Thomas gôf. (Note: gôf – Welsh for blacksmith.)

Thursday. Ditto. I was ditto this morning. In the afternoon go to Llyslew. Stop in Llangefni about our been Brynsiencyn chapel. Hear W. Griffith. (Note: Llyslew a farm in the parish of Llanidan was the home of William Jones’ uncle William Jones, brother of David Jones, Glybcoed. William Jones, Llyslew and his family were closely associated with the Methodist chapel at Brynsiencyn. William Jones was a deacon there from 1847 till his death in 1864.)

Sunday. Fair. Easter Sunday. I was in Penysarn Wesleyan chapel at 2 o’clock. Mr. Hughes, Madyn begin. (Note: Mr. Hughes, Madyn was at that time a prominent supporter of the chapel.)

Tuesday. Rain. I was home this morning. In the afternoon in the Vestry. At night been with Mr. Owens in Amlwch.

Saturday. Fine day. I was mending the hedge from here to the road. In the afternoon been with Mr. Hills. Been in Amlwch see the show. Come home with H. Parry. (Note: Mr. Henry Hills owned a chemical works at Amlwch. The firm of Henry Hills and Sons manufactured chemical manures and was founded in 1840.)

Wednesday. Ditto. We commenced sowing today in crincae 6 sacks. Been in Amlwch & Cemaes. (Note: crincae – one of the Glybcoed fields; Cemaes Bay O.S. Grid Reference 372934.)

Thursday. Ditto. I was sowing oats, done crincae this morning. I was very sick after being in Cemaes. Sow 5 sacks in cae adlod. Swap for Brandy with Hills have £11 boat. (Note: cae adlod – one of the Glybcoed fields.)

Friday. Very fine day. I sowed 4 sacks in cae adlod this morning. In the afternoon go to Frondeg, from Frondeg to Llanderchymedd and from there to Dollawen. I slept there this night.

Saturday. Ditto. I was in Bangor fair this day. I sold my mare to Miss Roberts. I walked to Tynygongl this night.

Wednesday. Rain a bit. Row 3 sacks in cae pigsofl. Harrow it about 3 o’clock. Sow 1 sack in cae bach. (Note: cae pisgsofl – one of the fields. cae bach – one of the fields.)

Thursday. Showers. I did done (i.e. finished) cae bach this morning. In the afternoon being cae mawr Gwaen y forfyd. Sow 4 sacks.

Friday. Fine. We did done (i.e. finished) cae mawr with clover and everything.

Saturday. Ditto. Done (i.e. finished) sowing barley in cae tros y lon. Thomas comes home. (Note: Thomas – William Jones’ brother who was baptized on 9 March 1817 at Llangristiolus Church and died on 18 June 1856 at the age of 38. He was buried at Sardis Chapel, Dulas. Thomas was a twin brother of Owen.)

Sunday. Small boy from Penrhynoer was here. I have been in Castell with my brother Thomas. (Note: the small boy may have been a grandson of John Jones, Penrhynoer, Llangwyllog.)

Monday. Showers. I have been in Amlwch with Brother Thomas. He went home without me. Come home with Hugh Jones, Felin bach. (Note: Hugh Jones, a miller, Of Felin bach, Llanwenllwyfo was born in 1823 and was buried in Llanwenllwyfo churchyard on 18 August 1866 at the age of 43. I believe he married William Jones’ sister Catherine who was baptized at Llangristiolus church on 10 April 1819 and was buried in Llanwenllwyfo churchyard on 7 May 1896 at the age of 76. Felin bach adjoins Llanwenllwyfo (new) Church, O.S. Grid Reference 477894.)

Wednesday. Ditto. Sow 4½ ditto. Finish sowing. In afternoon plowing for barley in cae mawr. Thomas and David left home. (Note: Thomas and David – William Jones’ brothers. David was baptized on 11 Nov. 1821 at LLangristiolus church and died on 8 Dec. 1887 aged 66. He was buried at Sardis Chapel, Dulas.)

(Note: Rhosbol, a village mid-way between Amlwch and Llanerchymedd, O.S. Grid Reference 425883. The Dinorben Hotel, now the Dinorben Arms Hotel, is in the centre of Amlwch.)
